A Thriller of a Start! | Day 1

Well after all of the planning and anticipation it is time to finally start this adventure! I’m sure there could have always been more to pack and also felt like I packed more equipment than clothes. My mom gave me a ride to the airport for my flight to Boston. By some miracle when I had put in a request for a first class upgrade it was approved. Typically that never happens and I have to call 24hrs ahead to plead if I can get one. With a 10hr flight first class was certainly the right way to start the trip off. I sat at the airport bar since I was early and had a beer or two. I looked at the clock buy seemingly no announcement about boarding. I cashed out and walked over to find they were doing “Final Call!” So needless to say I was about the last person on the plane and then that would have been the shittiest way to start a trip ever! As I a was heading through the agriculture inspection there was a girl who had an item in question. The officer told her that whatever the item was couldn’t be taken with her. This sent her in to a tail spin as she looked around to her boyfriend in disbelief. The item in question was a mushroom. I assume it was not bought at a market due to its size. But that’s when she started begging the officer to let her take it. The answer continually was no and we started to cry. You would have thought the world was ending for this girl. Unfortunately I couldn’t see the resolution so I’m left to wonder, did she take that mushroom with her?

I sat in my 1C seat and had, without hesitation, the complimentary champagne. The captain came on and said there was a delay in the back and hopefully that would be resolved in a timely manor and we could depart. That delay lasted about 20 minutes and didn’t seem to be mechanical. Again I wondered, might this be the girl from earlier? I later found out during the flight that it was an unruly passenger. The lady apparently came on the plane mad, started having a fit, then appeared to be ill. She wanted to get off and then when the asked her to get off she didn’t care to any more. So, the marshals were called and she was escorted off of the plane with them and the medical staff. Not even out of the gate, pun intended, and already a story to be had. There may have been some mistakes made during the flight because I may have taken advantage of the free Old Fashions. Turns out I had a few more than I wanted to and only got 3 hours of sleep.

After I had gotten my bags I defaulted to taking an Uber to the hotel. It was only about 8 in the morning and my enthusiasm for exploring Boston before check in had vanished. Luckily enough they were able to check me in but not without a hiccup. My dad, and I, had called to make the reservation with his points which would make the stay free. The representative on the phone said this was no problem and I was added to the reservation. The front desk on the other hand told me that they would need to speak to my dad before letting me check in. It was 8am in Boston leaving it 2am Hawaii time so that wouldn’t be possible. After talking to a manager they were in fact able to let me check in and straight to a nap I went!

I woke up about 4:30pm and decided to rally for dinner. It was game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, and the Celtics were playing the Pacers at 8pm. I was feeling better from my flights decisions so got an Uber and headed to TD Garden. I figure I would go to one of the bars and have some food and a beer and see if ticket prices would fall. If not surely the bars would be packed for the game and could just hang around. I kept checking the Gametime, and Tickpick, apps but the prices were dropping as much as I had hoped. My dad and brother on the other hand kept egging me on to just get a ticket regardless. My brother even offered to pay for half of the ticket in a last ditch effort to get me to go. I ended up walking around the corner to this pretty cool hole in the wall bar. I sat down and the game was to tip off in about 10 minutes. An 8th row seat opened up for $200 so, possibly with some liquid encouragement, I jumped on the seat slammed my bear and raced across the street.

Turns out the actual arena is not located on the ground floor. You take two escalators to get to the main level. Grabbed a beer and found my seat which was in fact 8th row! With no one sitting on my right I figured that the person I bought them from has all of those and was unable to find other buyers. The game was an absolute thriller! The two guys that sat in front of me turns out one’s family is from Maui. They were a bit younger than me but we made friends instantly. Each tracking our games bets which not sure any of us won. With 10 seconds left Jaylen Brown hits a corner 3 to send it to overtime. Crowd goes NUTS and to Overtime we went. Celtics pulled out the W in a thriller and what a game to see at The Garden. I played the Uber game to perfection and instead of the $18 I paid to get to the arena they wanted $65 to go back. I got 2 $8 beers and 2 slices of pizza and like magic the price went back to $19 and headed back to the hotel. What a first day to say the least. Tomorrow is travel day to Munich!
